Project Title: Training Material Database

Project Executor: George Trowbridge, Houston Marine, phone # 800-557-9316

Operations Committee Contact: Todd Ripley, MARAD, phone # 202-366-2625

The objective of the Training Resources Database Project, initiated in PY 1997 was to create a database of all training resources that are available for the mariner.  The database would be used to identify what materials are available so that someone looking for a particular subject area could:

a. Determine if he could purchase an existing product, or if he had to develop something unique.

b. Compare products that are commercially available.

c. Contact the developer/supplier of the product to get more specific information.

d. Obtain product reviews for selected training topics that are of high interest.

The database has been set up at a website provided by Houston Marine/EXAMCO and can be accessed by connecting to http:\\www50.examco.com/tmrl/html/tmrl.cgi. SOCP Members reviewed a number of training videos and the information was compiled and input into the database. There is a link provided from the SOCP home page too (under Training Database). To facilitate easy identification, the website is being modified to include three tiers of identification; Group, Category and Video Title. An example of such a breakdown would be; Group-Engineering; Category-Welding; Video Title-Introduction to Gas Welding. A listing of the groups are: Safety and Survival, Navigation and Deck Operations, Engineering, Cargo Operations, Personal and Social Responsibility, Management, and Environmental Protection.

Effort will continue on populating the video database by direct contact with the maritime training video suppliers.
