Reliability, Availability and Maintainability. How often have we not thought of these important factors? Is this equipment reliable, is that part available and can we easily maintain this item? The SOCP’s RAM Database/SHIPNET answers these questions and more.

Reliability, safety and control of operating costs are absolutely vital for survival in the shipping industry. During the past several years, progressive maritime organizations around the world have been cooperating to form a world wide information network, called RAM/SHIPNET, to support the optimization of these three key factors throughout all stages of a vessel's life cycle. Consisting of layered Reliability, Availability and Maintainability databases, RAM/SHIPNET has been developed through a cooperative effort of owner/operators, Government organizations and regulatory agencies. The RAM/SHIPNET mission was designed to form an efficient information network for vessel operators and other industry participants to collect and share sanitized performance information on vessel equipment. Initial comparative studies of shipboard equipment using the SOCP’s RAM Database have revealed interesting results and encouraged manufacturers to improve the quality of their equipment.

The RAM/SHIPNET technology was successfully transferred to a commercial company called Resurgence and is currently being marketed as The Wave Software System. More information about this program may be obtained from www.resurgence-software.com.
