Mariner Recruitment and Retention
Recruitment & Career Path Working Group

There is no central point in which potential mariners can determine how to enter the industry or obtain career path information. Many marine industry positions leave little opportunity for or lack a planned career path compared to many other occupations. STCW-95 has also impacted this issue.   Lack of ease of entry and recruiting information and lack of clear upward mobility opportunities is a deterrent to recruiting and leads to short careers for existing mariners.  The Recruitment & Career Path Working Group was formed as a result of the Maritime Careers conference held at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, New York on 23-24 May 2001 to address issues in this area.
